YIKE KUIK
Yi Ke Kuik is a freelance writer and photojournalist from Malaysia. Having graduated from the Department of Journalism at National Cheng Chi University, she has a background as a reporter and studio director for a local television station for more than 4 years. Currently, she is pursuing a master's degree in Anthropology at National Taiwan University.
Yi Ke's writing has earned recognition, including the "Hua Zong Literary Reporting Award" in 2019 and the "Global Chinese Literature Nebula Award" in 2023. She and her team were also a finalist in the SOPA Awards 2021 under the "Excellence in Human Rights Reporting" category. Notable works include "An Investigation of the Mass Death of the Batek Tribe in Malaysia," published in Initium Media, and a piece of literary journalism titled "Akiya," narrating the legendary story of a Semai indigenous writer. Her articles have been compiled into books by the National Human Rights Museum of Taiwan, Spring Hill Publisher, and Fo Guang Shan Publishing.
In addition to her written works, Yi Ke's photography has been honored with the KLPF Photography Award and showcased at the Wonder Foto Festival in Taiwan. Her photographic collection about the albino community has been published by the Taiwanese online media platform "The Reporter."
In 2023, she served as one of the speakers at Tedx Petaling Street, sharing her journey of how she began engaging with indigenous communities and expressing her desire to advocate for them. Furthermore, she also initiated "MyProjek04" with the goal of continuing to document the history and culture of the "dan lain-lain," especially the indigenous people of the Malay Peninsula through both visual imagery and written narratives.
